Fabulous new book from Victoria Vane!

Part of the Kindle Worlds’ World of de Wolfe Pack, BRETON WOLFE is Victoria Vane’s astounding contribution. Set in 907, it is the story of Duchess Adèle of Vannes and Norseman Valdrik Vagr, who won Adèle’s Brittany fair and square. Ms. Vane captures perfectly the era, whether it be the political tumult, the setting, the mores; everything is spot on. The characters are wonderfully complex and fascinating, BRETON WOLFE is also convincingly action-packed, and I loved how Adèle and Valdrik dealt with what was given to them. Fans of Medieval fiction will love it, and so will Ms. Vanes’s fans. And dear readers, this is only the beginning, because there are two other books coming! (Only two, wrote she in disbelief!)

BRETON WOLFE by VICTORIA VANE (A De Wolfe Pack Kindle worlds novella)

BRETON WOLFE by VICTORIA VANE (A De Wolfe Pack Kindle worlds novella)

She swore to defy him to her dying breath… But passion blurs the line between love and hate…

The bluest blood and the hardest heart… at least when it comes to marriage… The daughter of a duke and granddaughter of a king, Adele of Vannes was bartered at birth in a marriage treaty for the sole purpose of producing a royal heir. When her philandering husband is slain by Norse marauders, she is coerced to wed again in order to protect her home and her people. Adele knows that her beloved Brittany needs a strong hand to survive, but how can she ever reconcile her bitterness and hatred with the desire she feels for her mortal enemy?

She’s the jewel he seeks for his Breton crown…A Barbarian bent on building a dynasty, Valdrik Vargr, ‘the Norse Wolf,’ is renowned for both his bravery in battle and shrewdness in statecraft. Setting his sights on claiming the kingdom of Brittany, he knows that siring sons from royal blood would solidify his hold, but the woman he would claim as his queen refuses to have him. Will he fuel her hatred by taking her to his bed, or will the man who strikes terror in the hearts of men be reduced to wooing his bride?

Adèle spent the night on her knees in prayer, gaze cast heavenward in supplication. She hadn’t dared to bow her head and shut her eyes for fear that sleep would overtake her. She couldn’t afford to be caught aware when the marauders came. And they would come. That was a certainty. Rudalt had never returned from his ‘Norse” hunt. None of them had returned. They were dead. She felt it down to her bones.

She’d dispatched riders to Cournailles but he was days away. He would never arrive in time. Her home would be burned to ashes before help ever came. Perhaps she could buy them off? Did she have enough silver and jewels to pay tribute? Or would the Norsemen simply extract their payment in woman’s flesh and men’s blood?

Her throat thickened at the sudden remembrance of her wedding night. She had borne Rudalt’s ravaging for years; surely she could survive it again. And survival was all she dared hope for. The Norse would come with their battle axes and siege machines. The Bretons might keep them at bay for a few hours or maybe a day, but penetration of their walls was inevitable. She had no true defenses outside of a few dozen archers. In his arrogance, Rudalt had taken the best warriors, leaving her defenseless.

From her bedchamber window, Adèle cast her gaze eastward where the sun was rising, painting the landscape of rolling hills in soft shades of pink and gold. She stared off into the distance, chewing her lip and willing her nerves to settle. Last night she’d worn holes in her slippers and bitten her fingernails to the quick. She now accepted that her fate was out of her hands. She had no choice but to entrust herself to the merciful will of God. If death awaited her, she prayed it would be swift.

Moving shadows appeared on the horizon. A moment later they took shape as a solid line of men. Hundreds of mounted men. But rather than shrinking in terror, a strange peace settled over her. She was the daughter of Judicael, a great warrior and Duke of Brittany. Her great-grandfather was Erispoe, the first proclaimed King of the Bretons. She would do as the father and grandfather had done before her—she would fight them to her dying breath.

I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO by Mary Burton

Thanks to NetGalley I was able to get a copy of I”LL NEVER LET YOU GO by Mary Burton for review.   I was quite excited because I love romantic suspense and Mary Burton is one of the best in this genre.

I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO is part of the Morgans of Nashville series, but before I read this book I was unaware it was part of a series.  Yes, there were a few things in I’ll NEVER LET YOU GO that I was unaware of because they must have happened in books I’ve yet to read, but did those small things keep me from enjoying I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO?  Not at all!

Leah Carson escaped an abusive husband, but while she was able to escape the physical abuse the emotional toll it left her is still lingering four years later.  Little cracks are however beginning to develop in the wall that Leah has built around herself, and she is becoming good friends with a woman who has invited her to join a local running group

Running is something that Leah once excelled at, but due to one last brutal attack from the man she was married to Leah no longer has the lung capacity to run the way she once did, but as with so many things in her life, running is something she is determined she will get back and be able to once again enjoy.

Alex Morgan is an investigator with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and is hot on the trail of the woman that has befriended Leah because he believes that she is a good cop gone bad.  Alex convinces his brother to board his dog at the vet hospital where Leah is an associate vet, so that he may use Leah to get close to his prey.

What happens from here is that the hunter slowly becomes the hunted, and Leah turns out not to be the only victim.  Is Leah’s husband finally back to finish the job he started 4 years earlier or is there someone out there copying his horrid crimes, and stalking not only Leah, but those with whom she has finally started to get close to?

Mary Burton does an excellent job of leading readers down a path and then having that path take an unexpected twist that I for one didn’t see coming.  I’ve always tended to be a little cautious in being sure my house is locked even when I’m in it and being aware of my surroundings, and after reading I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO I think I might have to be a little more aware…the story is just that real!

This weekend I was going to participate for the first time in the DeweyReadathon.  (If that’s not quite the right title I do apologize!)  I was looking forward to a lazy day at home with the dogs and no distractions to finally sit and read and hopefully finish not only the book I’ve had no time to read, but maybe another one as well.  I knew there was no way I could last the whole 24 hours, but I didn’t even make it one hour!

Why you might be wondering did I not even read for a hour?  I didn’t realize my husband was planning on being home and working on the major dejunking project that I’ve been asking for what seems a lifetime to get done.  I can’t sit around and read while he’s in the mood to dejunk.

We live in a small house with extremely limited storage, so we’ve been paying for outside storage for years.  What went from one unit has grown to three, and that doesn’t count the junk in the garage..so bad to where I can’t even get my car in there, and sometimes I feel like it’s dangerous to walk through!

Anyway…we’re now pretty much on a first name basis with the donation center, and I got to make a big run to Half Price Books where I used part of what I got to get birthday presents for some of my friends.  The rest I’m going to be using to buy an Amazon G.C. where I can then get electronic books and continue to be a book hoarder but not in the pyschical sense.

So good job to those who actually participated and hopefully when the spring comes I’ll be ready, willing, and able to participate!

daughterI purchased THE SECRET DAUGHTER  by Kelly Rimmer for my Kindle through Amazon. Although the story is fiction, the subject matter is, unfortunately, all too real.

THE SECRET DAUGHTER tells the story of Sabina, a pregnant 38 year old Australian who has her world shattered when she finds out that not only is she adopted, but she is a victim of the “forced adoptions” that were common in the not too distant past. As she searches for her birth mother, she has to come to terms with the atrocities that were committed against young, unmarried girls by her own government.

As a woman who gave birth at a young age, I found THE SECRET DAUGHTER to be heartbreaking. It is well written and definitely keeps you interested. Reading how Sabina wondered who she would have been had she not been adopted made me feel like I was right there with her as her emotions jumped all over the place. I didn’t know anything about forced adoptions, so I have been researching this topic since finishing the book.

It is outrageous to think how many people were affected by this.  I do think that it wrapped up too neatly to be completely realistic. But I would recommend THE SECRET DAUGHTER. It’s very thought provoking and I find myself going back to it several times a day.

51H50Zv+fvL._SX308_BO1,204,203,200_I received ALL I WANT by Jill Shalvis from NetGalley for an honest review.  ALL I WANT is part of the Animal Magnetism series, but does a superb job of standing alone, as I discovered because unfortunately I have not read the previous books in the series.  (This is a problem I need to remedy ASAP!)

Zoe Stone is living alone after having done her best to be a surrogate parent to her sister and brother.  She’s decided it is time to take control of her life, and put herself first.  To assist with this she has agreed to a blind date with a dentist.  Her sister is helping her to dress, and while she’d love for Zoe to put on the LBD (Little Black Dress) Zoe insists on a more subdued style…something that invokes thoughts of Grannies playing BINGO.

When the doorbell rings Zoe decides she’s going to be assertive and take control of the date from the beginning.   To do this she kisses the handsome stranger at the door and that kiss results in instant chemistry.  Sounds like a great way to start a date right?  Wrong!

The handsome stranger at the door isn’t her blind date, but rather Parker James, a friend of her brother Wyatt’s who is going to be renting a room from Zoe for a bit while on “vacation” and recovering from a rather dramatic work accident.

Parker  who doesn’t understand the word vacation goes against superior orders and spies on the person responsible for his work incident, and whom he is determined will face the justice system for more than one crime.  While Parker isn’t fully recovered it doesn’t stop him from being the type of man that any woman would want, and as you read ALL I WANT I’m confident you’ll be like me and going aww…and where can I get a Parker?

Naturally the path to love isn’t smooth, because after all where would the fun be if girl kissed boy, and the next day they were running off to get married?   When you pick up ALL I WANT by Jill Shalvis you’ll want to be sure you have a clear day, as you’ll not want to quit reading until you turn the last page, or click the last click.

ALL I WANT doesn’t’ just have great chemistry between the main characters, it also has siblings look out for one another, as well as an adorable dog named Oreo who reluctantly adopts two kittens who end up being named Bonnie and Clyde, and like their namesakes manage to have their own adventures!  Rest assured that if you haven’t read the previous books in the series you won’t be lost by picking up this installment; rather you’ll want to go back and read from the beginning!  That’s where you’ll be finding me…searching for the rest of the books in the Animal Magnetism series.

ALL WRAPPED UP by Kimberly Kincaid is book 6 in the Pine Mountain Series.  I received the book from NetGalley  in exchange for a review.

Since the first book in the series, Turn Up The Heat I have been a huge fan of Kimberly Kincaid and the Pine Mountain series.  This latest installment features Nick Brennan and Ava Mancuso.  Many years ago they had met and had an instant attraction that unfortunately burned hot and furious, and ended when without any explanation Ava left their summer job never to be seen or heard from again…that is until seven years later their paths crossed and each has secrets they want to protect.
Each went on to pursue their dreams, but fate often can and does have a different idea for how our futures will turn out, and what happened for both Brennan (as he now prefers to be called) and Ava is far from the ideal life they dreamed of as starry-eyed youth.   Now fate has tossed their lives another curve, and Ava who was on her way to cover another non-important story for the paper she works with see the story of a lifetime before her, as a local store…Joe’s Grocery no less is demolished in a fire.  A young boy is stranded in the store, and who is the hero who risks all to rescue him?  None other than Brennan.

Ava senses a story and will stop at almost nothing to get it.  Brennan who has a past wants his past to stay there, but Ava who is nothing if not persistent dogs him, and when Brennan decides to give some of his story Ava has to give some of her past to him in exchange.  The time they spend together ends up healing both of them, but not without them each having to pay a price.

In the end ALL WRAPPED UP is an exceptional story in the Pine Mountain Series .  With All WRAPPED UP Ms. Kincaid introduces us to some exciting firemen who are al members of Engine Company 8.  These brave men will be the basis for the next series that Ms. Kincaid is going to grace her readers with.  While I will miss Pine Mountain I will console myself with the fact that somehow I missed a book in the series and still have one that I can pull up on my Kindle and escape city life for the rural mountain side town for a bit.
